Ready For The Notting Hill Carnival?

Talk about carnivals and the first thing that would come to mind would be South America. The region is known for its wild carnivals. But do you know that London has its own carnival tradition? The Notting Hill Carnival is one of the most exciting carnivals in Europe. Since 1964, the huge South American community in Notting Hill “takes control” of the area to mount a carnival that you have to see to believe. This is the largest street festival in Europe and celebrates the tradition of Afro-Caribbean communities in England.

The very first Notting Hill Carnival was an attempt to showcase the steel band musicians who played in the Earls Court of London every weekend. When the bands paraded through the streets of Notting Hill, they drew black residents out on to the streets because it reminded them of the Caribbean homes they had left behind. Today, the carnival attracts people from all over the world!

During this year’s August Bank Holiday, from Sunday 25th and Monday 26th, one of the most opulent areas in London changes its face and shows its hidden Brazilian side. The music will drive you into a frenzy, especially since it is the very heart of the carnival. Traditional and contemporary sounds merge together to drive people to dance. Various performance stages also feature local bands, top international artists and sounds from around the world – Eddie Grant, Jamiroquai, Wyclef Jean, Courtney Pine and Burning Spear have all graced the festival in previous years.

Notting Hill Carnival is not only about music though; food is another key element of the event. The fantastic smell of the food is fabulous and very inviting. The typical Caribbean food has its stunning and delicious aromas. Notting Hill Carnival provides the perfect introduction to jerk chicken, rice and peas and rum punch as well as the interesting taste of other exotic cuisines.
