Kennington

Kennington offers you the calm of a quiet residential area, filled with brightly coloured independent shops and restaurants with the bustling and vibrant areas of Waterloo and Vauxhall only minutes away. You're only a stones throw away from the Thames and further on, Central and North London.

Kennington straddles the two London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark and has that interesting multi-cultural south London vibe. As a result of its close-proximity to the Houses of Parliament, Kennington is politicians aplenty and can be found living on the quiet streets. Kennington is perfect for families with children or businesspeople who want to escape the noise and crowds of the West End of an evening.

Kennington Tourist Attractions and History:

Kennington's local attractions cater to fans of both history and sport. It's home to The Oval, one of the most famous cricket venues in Britain. The Kennington - or Kia - Oval is actually home to the Surrey County Cricket Club but you might know it from hosting the final Test match of the England summer cricket season. Nicknamed The Grand Old Lady, due to its heritage, it has also seen football and rugby matches in its long history.

Try the Imperial War Museum which is on your doorstep and close to Lambeth North tube station. It's housed in the beautiful, Victorian, former hospital - Bethlem (or Bedlam) Royal Hospital and is twinned with the Churchill War Rooms just across the river underneath the Treasury building in Whitehall, Westminster. Originally founded to record the war effort of Britain in the First World War, it now houses collections that relate to modern war and its impact on society - like military vehicles and aircraft, photographs, art and official documents.

Also in Kennington, you might be interested to know that Kennington Park Road and Clapham Road follows the old Roman road, Slane Street. In Roman times, this ran from the Roman London Bridge all the way to Chicester. Another local meeting point is Kennington Common, or Kennington Park, which is a nicely laid out Victorian park so make sure to drop by if you're staying in one of our Kennington apartments.

Getting to London's Big Attractions:

If you're staying in Kennington, the Northern line will be your best friend - it will get you to most of London's best tourist hotspots and famous landmarks in a matter of minutes. Stops on the Northern line in the area include Kennington, Oval and a bit further north you'll find Waterloo.

Plus there's also Lambeth North station around the corner which runs on the Bakerloo line and will get you to Oxford Circus for some retail therapy courtesy of Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street in no time. Carry on to Baker Street and Madame Tussauds on the Bakerloo line.

Kennington also has good bus links over the river - jump on a bus from Kennington Park Road or alternatively grab a Boris bike and cycle instead. You're enviably central in Kennington so you could cycle to Westminster, St James Park and Big Ben from here without breaking out in too much of a sweat. From there you can continue to Buckingham Palace, Victoria and Piccadilly Circus on foot.

In the evenings, if you fancy treating yourself  - you are located just minutes away from central London, so have no qualms over the cost of jumping in a taxi back to your Boutique London Lets apartment - it shouldn't set you back more than £10...  and not many people in London can say that, trust us.

Kennington Insider Tips and Eating Out:

Kennington really outdoes itself on independent cafes and restaurants in the area - they have bags of character and aren't just stretches of chains that you'd see anywhere in the UK. Chinese Bowl and Meeting Point do good Chinese and Japanese cuisine on the corner of Hercules Road and Kennington Road or try some seafood courtesy of Windmill Fish Bar, Mr Fish Bar or Lobster Pot.

Otherwise, there's great Indian food at Ghandi's on Kennington Road South and Imperial Tandoori on Kennington Lane North. Or for Thai, there's Thai Pavillion East or Thai Silk.

As a nightcap, you won't find a lot of bars in Kennington but there are plenty of cosy pubs, some of which serve up good food too as a bonus. These include the White Hart and Dog Cross on Kennington Cross and the Tankard near the Imperial War Museum but you really can't walk two steps together without running into a pub round here so just have a wander and see what takes your fancy.

For something a little different, and if you fancy a late night dance, South London Pacific is Kennington's resident tiki bar and has a nice crowd of late 20s, 30s and 40s tiki-lovers. The bar itself is themed and has a few booths, great cocktail list, friendly staff and a fun dancefloor on Fridays and Saturdays.

Kennington Amenities:

There's plenty of newsagents and mini-marts for those essentials or stop by the massive Tesco supermarket for groceries, wine, clothes or toiletries that you might need.

There's a City and Country Farmer's Market based in the grounds of St Mark's Church in The Oval and you can shop here on Saturdays from 10am till 3pm for meat, fish, bread, cakes, fruit, vegetables and eggs. The East Street market in Walworth is also within walking distance for fruit and vegetable stalls.

"I love the architecture and history of London's buildings and museums. And on the other end of the spectrum, I love the football season: just being part of the crowd and watching the adrenalin-pumping games.". Read more from the team
